Medical Marijuana services offered in

Medical marijuana is approved in the state of Maryland, but are you familiar with how the program works? Julia Gabriel, NP, of Old Greenbelt Family Health, is happy to assist with the certification process for those who qualify for medical marijuana use. That process begins by calling the office in Greenbelt, Maryland, or setting up an initial visit using the online booking tool.

Medical Marijuana Q & A

What are some medical uses for marijuana?

The marijuana plant has more than 100 distinct chemicals, each of which can affect the human body differently. Researchers know that marijuana has medicinal properties, and there are clear links between responsible use of this medication and improvements in certain diseases and conditions.

In Maryland, medical marijuana is approved for treating the following conditions:

  • Glaucoma
  • Persistent muscle spasms
  • Anorexia
  • Cachexia (wasting syndrome)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Severe or chronic pain
  • Nausea
  • Seizures

The law also allows medical marijuana as a treatment for any “chronic medical condition which is severe and for which other treatments have been ineffective.”

How do I get a medical marijuana card?

The first step is registering with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC). You must be at least 18 years of age to register yourself, but parents can register children as long as the parent or guardian is designated as the child’s caregiver.

The next step is to see a medical provider for an assessment. Old Greenbelt Family Health can provide a physical exam to determine if you meet the qualifications for medical marijuana use in the state of Maryland.

If so, you provide your practitioner with your MMCC ID card and receive the certification needed to purchase your medication legally.

How long does it take to be cleared for a medical marijuana card?

The process of registering with the MMCC takes just a few moments, but it can take up to 30 days for the MMCC to review and approve your application. Once that process is complete, you can move forward with your medical provider.

A one-time office visit is often sufficient to determine if you have a qualifying medical condition. If so, the process of certifying your condition is done electronically.

In most cases, you can have your temporary MMCC card right away and take your prescription to a dispensary the same day. A permanent card is mailed to you shortly afterward. It’s important to note that you must use your temporary MMCC card to purchase medical marijuana within 120 days of issue, or the card becomes null and void.

If you have additional questions about the benefits of medical marijuana or how to get your MMCC card, schedule a visit at Old Greenbelt Family Health online or by phone today.
